Jack and his mother live in a small 12 x 12 room. They spend their days in a careful routine of playing, eating, exercising and watching TV. For Jack’s mother it is a prison, a nightmare, but for Jack it is simply home and his entire world.
“Room” is a truly unique and different read. Author Emma Donoghue delicately brings to light the harrowing situation of a woman held captive through Jack’s simplistic, but often beautiful voice. The narrative is incredibly creative and endlessly fascinating. And despite the fairly dark subject matter, this is a story of perseverance and triumph.
Content note: grisly subject matter of a woman held captive and raped, some language and violence.
