Book Review: A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

Deep sigh. I loved this book. The journey of Mattie Gokey, the main character, a sixteen-year-old girl who has aspirations of college and becoming a writer, but has little hope of seeing those dreams come to life, is a heartwarming tale. Mattie is a strong, lovable and true character and her love for books and words is one I share and understand.

Inspired by the real life murder of a young woman in 1906, A Northern Light is gracefully written and well researched. Mattie’s quest for her own life is pushed forward by the life lost. Through much struggle and hardship, Mattie finds her voice and her purpose. This coming of age tale is one every girl can relate to no matter her age or situation.
