Friday night I attended the Children’s Literature Association of Utah Spring Banquet. The winners of the Beehive Book Award for 2012 were announced. This award is so cool because kids do all the final voting.
Here are the winners for this year:
Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
“A shark and train compete in a series of contests to see who wins.”
CHILDREN’S FICTION (middle grade)
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
“Melody discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever but finds that not everyone is ready to hear what she has to say.”
Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift’s “Chocolate Pilot” by Michael O. Tunnell
“Following WWII, U.S. Air Force pilot, Gail Halvorsen, dropped candy packages to bring joy to the children of the ruined city of Berlin.”
The Dancing Pancake by Elieen Spinelli
“In this story, told entirely in verse, Bindi tries to figure out how to be a new version of herself, one pancake and silly elephant joke at a time.”
YOUNG ADULT FICTION
Dragonfly by Julia Golding
“Princess Taoshira and Prince Ramil of Gerfal hate each other on sight and their impending marriage looks doomed until the pair is kidnapped. They must put aside their differences to save both kingdoms.”
Congrats to all the winners!
