Welcome to seriously cool, kick-butt (both Karate black belts!) authors and my Literary Counsel sisters, Tina Moss and Yelena Casale. Together they wrote an urban fantasy/paranormal romance novel that is now on shelves, A TOUCH OF DARKNESS.
I asked Tina and Yelena to tell us about the books and authors that helped inspire their writing. Take it away, ladies . . . (written by Tina)
Yelena and I share similar tastes and adore our genre. Urban fantasy and paranormal romance are where we feel most comfortable writing and what we most enjoy reading. Three of our top favorite series are:
- Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series
- Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series
- Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series and Archangel series
But, we could name a dozen or two more authors who we equally adore. The biggest challenge writing in these particular genres are sharing virtual shelf space with the amazing superstar authors. It’s such a talented market that it can be intimidating to have your book next to one of these books. Yet, it’s also an incredible honor.
Frost, Andrews, Singh and so many others inspire our writing. Singh’s unparalleled ability to create a unique and vibrant world pushes us to detail our universe and up our world-building skills. Frost’s mastery of characterization and dialogue makes us want to study and adapt techniques to make our characters fresh and original. Finally, Andrews power unit of husband and wife team, Ilona and Gordon, demonstrate how truly effective co-writing can be when both authors are in sync.
The common denominator in all these series is the presence of a strong female heroine, and a hero who isn’t intimidated by that feminine strength. It was important for us, in writing A Touch of Darkness, to have this element in the story. We wanted a strong female character beside a male who would bolster and admire that strength, not feel threatened by it. Eventually, both would learn from each other and become a cohesive unit. Likewise, Yelena and I learned from each other in the writing process to emerge as a solid co-writing team.
Equally, the series are written by three impressive women, and one amazing man, who write unafraid. They don’t shy away from difficult subject matter. We didn’t want to tap dance around challenging issues either, but instead dive in with courage and conviction. In A Touch of Darkness, we’ve built layers into the story to question the concepts and definitions of “good” and “evil”. It’s our sincerest hope that the reader puts down the book at the end with that main question in mind. If we can achieve this, then we’ll feel as if we’ve lived up to our goal, and our inspiring author role-models.

TOUCH OF DARKNESS SUMMARY
Cassie’s working for a tightwad boss at a pretentious NYC diner, dealing with paralyzing pain that doctors can’t diagnose, and trying to hide her hands that glow purple whenever she …well, whenever.
So, when a mysterious stranger walks out of her dreams and into her life to spout some nonsense about her being a mythical creature, she chalks it up to one more crazy thing to add to her it’s-a-crappy-life list. Yet, when the stranger’s predictions start to come true, she discovers a world that could shake up her humdrum existence.
